St Johns College, CRIPPS Building, Cambridge

END USER: St Johns College

VALUE: £20m

Grade II listed building designed by Powell and Moya providing 199 under-graduate study bedrooms and 9 apartments for fellows.  Included new porters lodge, gym and cycle storage facilities and refurbishment of the punt dock.

St Johns appointed us to be the Construction Managers for the scheme where we tendered, recommended and appointed trade contractors for all the works, where each trade was employed directly by the College so they get best value.

We managed the whole process from setting up the site, to managing of design, costs and all the works on site with our excellent team.

We saved time by looking at alternatives to running the project such as introducing a temporary bridge and bringing vehicles through part of a building allowing materials to be delivered to the work face within an enclosed courtyard. We saved time on the demolition works by challenging the structural engineer which enabled us to introduce temporary works for the 1st area which were then inspected and these temporary works were then not required for the remainder of the building so we could proceed unhindered.

The project finished significantly under budget and 9 months ahead of programme a testament to our team but also the Trade Contractors who worked collaboratively with us to reach our goal. St Johns College were also excellent in allowing us to offer suggestions to improve the process and making quick decisions so the scheme could move along smoothly.

We even managed a day's down time to allow for the filming of The Theory of Everything.
